Welcome to the website of the Ministry Among Guyanese (MAG)

30th September, 2008.

FROM:           PASTOR ERROL INSHANALLY – PRESIDENT OF THE E.L.C.G.

TO:     ALL PASTORS, DEACONS/DEACONESS, PARISH AND CHURCH COUNCILS OF THE E.L.C.G.

SUBJECT:   NEWS CAPSULES IV FROM THE E.L.C.G.

Dear -Fellow Co- Workers,

IN NOMINE JESU!!!

It is said that the authorship of the Epistle to the Hebrews is the riddle of the New Testament.  We don’t know to this day who wrote the Epistle despite some educated guesses.  Whoever he or she was, the author tells us concerning Abraham; “HE LEFT HIS OWN COUNTRY WITHOUT KNOWING WHERE HE WAS GOING” (Hebrews: 11:9).  These words later prompted St. Gregory of Nyassa to remark that is precisely why Abraham was heading the right way.

We welcome you to another summary of news making the rounds across the E.L.C.G.

(1).       FATHER AND DAUGHTER APPLY SIMULTANEOUSLY FOR MINISTRY IN THE E.L.C.G:

While a daughter may follow in the footsteps of a father who is himself a Pastor, it is rather rare that a father and a daughter have offered themselves simultaneously to serve the Church as future Pastors.  The Executive Council has received the applications for the Ordained Ministry from Mr. Kampta Karran and his daughter Kavita.

The Karran family hails from Belle Vue, West Bank Demerara and attends the King of Glory Lutheran Church.  Their involvement in their congregation and indeed the Ascension Parish tells of their commitment to knowing Jesus and making Him known.

The Executive Council has forwarded their applications to the Committee on Vocations for further actions.

We wish both Mr. Kampta and Ms. Kavita Karran all the best!!!

(2).       MINISTERIUM MAKES A BOLD START:

The Ministerium of the E.L.C.G had its first meeting in over a year when it convened on Thursday, September 25th, 2008 at Faith Lutheran Church, West Coast, Berbice. The Pastors were joined by their colleagues from the Diaconate Order as they spent the day, sharing their faith stories and encouraging one another.  The Chairman -Pastor Stephen Nahar, also led Ministerium in discussing the place of CREMATION in a Lutheran Context.  The discussions were enlivened with members sharing personal anecdotes.

Also Ministerium revisited the T.V Ministry of the Church with some urgent suggestions for improvement.

Ministerium will hold its next meeting on December 10th at King of Glory, Belle Vue to end the calendar year.

(3).       LEADERSHIP SEMINAR DRAWS GOOD ATTENDANCE:

A leadership seminar for the Berbice District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Women (E.L.C.W) drew a good attendance on Saturday September 20th, 2008 at the Lutheran Lay Academy Hall in New Amsterdam.  Some thirty six (36) women from various Parishes benefited from a dynamic presentation by Pastor Diana Liverpool who examined the proposition that women are better leaders than men. She illustrated her presentation by showing the scientific differences between the male and female brain.  Pastor Diana drew heavily from both the Old and New Testaments to show how women of God rose up to face the challenges of the day in a male dominated age.

(4).       BERBICE GRADUATES WELCOME EXTRA LESSONS:

Nine (9) Graduates of the Lutheran Lay Academy in the Berbice division welcomed classes on Saturday 27th September, in New Amsterdam.  The morning class centered on a general treatment of the Book of Revelation.  The afternoon class was a counselling session on the subject of SUICIDE.  In addition to the graduates, the classes are open to the New Amsterdam and Canje Christian Council.  Pastor Inshanally led the two classes.

(5).      MEDICAL TEAM FROM FELLOWSHIP LUTHERAN CHURCH DUE SOON:

Word is already out in various communities that the Medical Team from Fellowship Lutheran in Oklahoma will be arriving soon.  In fact this year the Medical Team Composition is being described as a “LEAN, MEAN MEDICAL MACHINE”.  Under the expert direction of Dr. Jane Purser, the Team will arrive on October, 30th and will depart on November 8th, 2008.  During its stay some of the communities to benefit medically will be:

(1).       Sand Hills up the Demerara river.

(2).       Belle Vue, West Bank Demerara.

(3).       West Coast Berbice.

(4).       Corentyne

Pastor Richard Young, who is also a Medical Doctor, is handling the arrangements here in Guyana to make the Medical Team’s visit a success.

(6).       BERBICE DISTRICT OF NATIONAL YOUTH COMMISSION IS LAUNCHED:

On Saturday September, 13th at Bethel Lutheran Church, Sheet Anchor Turn, the Berbice District of the National Youth Commission was officially launched with the elections of Office Bearers.  Youths from several Parishes in the Berbice Area voted their colleagues into Office.

The Chairperson of the National Youth Commission – Ms. Shelda Emanuel was present.  Also present was Ms. Shirley Jaundoo as an assistant.

 The elected Officers are:

President                                Christopher Mohandatt

 Vice-President                       Pamela Sibdhanie

Secretary                                Ryan Hookumchand

Treasurer                                Sabrina Persaud

It is expected that on Saturday October 4th, the Demerara District will also meet to elect new Office Bearers.  This meeting is scheduled to be held at Sadhu Sundar Singh at Truimph, East Coast Demerara.

(7).       UPDATE ON TRIP TO REFORMATION PARISH :

A 3-man Team undertook a journey up the Berbice River to meet and worship with the members of the Reformation Parish.  The Team comprised of Pastors Nicholson and Inshanally and Executive Council member layman – Mohandatt.  This visit was between 6th - 8th September, 2008.

Various concerns were aired.  Worship services with Holy Communion were held in five (5) of the seven (7) congregations of the Parish.

A suggestion was made by the Team to return in January, 2009 for a longer visit.  This structured visit will include teaching some classes from the curriculum of the Lutheran Lay Academy to interested students who were unable to attend on the Coast.

Another suggestion was to make the Reformation Parish a venue to receive two (2) visiting Wartburg Theological Seminary Students for their January Practicum in 2009.  The acting Pastor and the Parish Council have expressed their willingness to embrace both suggestions with the approval of the Executive Council.

(8).       ST STEPHEN CONGREGATION IS REOPENED!!!

Over a hundred folks, some travelling as far as Corriverton and Chateau Margot, were in attendance to witness the Rededication of St. Stephen Congregation at Bush Lot Farm on the Corentyne on August 31st, 2008 at 1:00 p.m.

Mr. Bactawar and Mr. Mohandatt received a loud applause for their heroic efforts to help the Congregation back on its feet.  During the service, the Ebenezer E.L.C.W. rendered a musical item.  The Organist for the occasion was Mr. Samuels.  A history of the Church was prepared and read by Mr. Mohan Seepersaud.

Ironically the Gospel lesson for the day (16th Sunday after Pentecost) was taken from Matthew 18:15-20 with these words included “Where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there with them.”

(9).       BIRTHDAY GREETINGS FOR A SON OF THE REFORMATION PARISH:

CLIVE KURTZIOUS is one of the longest serving Lutheran members of the Reformation Parish.  He has been a member of his home congregation in Kimbia for some forty-eight (48) years, twenty (20) of which have seen him serving as the Parish Treasurer.

He was baptized in the year 1958 by the Rev. John Henry.

New Capsule salutes him on his upcoming 64th Birthday on October 7th 2008 and wishes him Many Happy Returns!!!!

(10).   ST MICHAEL PARISH PROMOTES LITERACY:

Free library services are presently provided in the Communities being served by the St Michael Parish.  Through the effort of Pastor Judy Mc Guire and the Parish Council, scores of children are now active members of libraries in the four (4) Congregations of the Parish.  At a time when reading is at an-all-time-low in schools, it is great to see St Michael Parish promoting literacy.  For example, in Alness village, the library operating from St Michael Congregation is the only one in that community.  The librarian there is Aunty Nooran Nahar, mother of Pastor Stephen Nahar.  It is opened on Tuesdays and Saturdays in the afternoon hours.
