The
Ministry Among
Guyanese (MAG) was started in 1993 as a
committee of the Metropolitan New York Synod of
the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).
MAG's mission is to reach out to Guyanese in the
Metro area with worship opportunities,
fellowship, and to seek ways to re-connect
people to the Lutheran Church in the United
States. We are pleased to be in partnership with
the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS)
churches in the area.
In
1993, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in
Guyana (ELCG) celebrated her 250th
anniversary of its founding by Dutch
planters at Fort Nassau in the Berbice
River, with a year-long celebration
across Guyana and in each of the local
parishes. The Guyanese Lutheran
community in the United States,
particularly in the Metro New York area,
so much desired to be a part of the
festivities in remembering and
celebrating their Lutheran heritage that
both laity and clergy sought out how
this could become a reality under the
banner of the metro synodical bodies.
This gave birth to MAG, an
auxiliary of the Metro New York Synod,
which committee made plans for a grand
worship service of thanksgiving.
The organizers of this celebratory
worship gathering soon envisioned MAG as
a partner in ministry with the ELCG in
providing support to the national
church, with greater emphasis in the Christian
Education Department. MAG uses
the Offerings received at its
annual Reformation worship services in
October and
at the Advent Service of Carols
in December, in
additional to financial contributions
by individual supporters, to
meet its partnership goals with the ELCG.

The
Ministry Among Guyanese is not
only a
ministry
for Guyanese Lutherans in the
Metro New York area, and as such MAG invites those
beyond the five boroughs of New York
City to participate in its
programs every year, as they are able. It seeks to include
young and old, alike; native Guyanese as
well as those of American birth, and
people of other nationalities, in
reflecting the rich diversity of the
whole people of God in Christ Jesus.
MAG is very pleased to have, and
is grateful to the many supporters, both
laity and clergy, in the wider Lutheran
community and in other denominations in
the United States.
The
mission statement: "To remember and
celebrate; to reconnect and support, to
re-root and blossom in Christ, Our Lord"
clearly tells what MAG is about.
